What a strong 5.NBT.B.7 worksheet covers

The standard rolls four operations into one statement, but students don't master them at the same pace. A good worksheet hits every operation and progresses from concrete (models, grids) to abstract (algorithms with explanations).

  • 2–3 addition problems with decimals to hundredths (e.g., 4.27 + 3.86).
  • 2–3 subtraction problems, including at least one across a regrouping boundary (e.g., 6.05 − 2.47).
  • 3–4 multiplication problems, starting with decimal × whole number, then decimal × decimal.
  • 2–3 division problems, including one with a decimal divisor (e.g., 7.2 ÷ 0.4).
  • 2 word problems that require choosing the operation (real-world money, distance, or measurement context).
  • 1 "explain your reasoning" prompt tied to a place-value model — this is the part of the standard most worksheets skip and most tests assess.

Question stems that match the standard's verbs

The standard explicitly mentions "strategies," "written method," and "explain the reasoning." Mix your prompts so students get practice with all three:

  • "Solve. Show your work using a place-value chart."
  • "Estimate first, then solve. Was your estimate reasonable?"
  • "Use the standard algorithm. Then explain in 1–2 sentences why the decimal point lands where it does."
  • "Draw a model (grid, number line, or area model) and use it to solve."

Common student mistakes to anticipate

Build at least one distractor or warm-up problem around each of these — they're the errors that show up on state tests:

  • Lining up by the last digit instead of the decimal point when adding or subtracting (e.g., writing 4.27 + 3.8 stacked so the 7 and 8 align).
  • Forgetting to count both factors' decimal places in multiplication (e.g., 0.4 × 0.3 = 0.12, not 1.2).
  • Dividing without converting the divisor to a whole number (7.2 ÷ 0.4 is the same as 72 ÷ 4).
  • Stopping when the dividend hits zero in division, missing the need to bring down zeros after the decimal.

Answer key best practices

For 5.NBT.B.7, a bare answer key isn't enough — the standard requires students to explain. Your answer key should include:

  • The final answer.
  • The decimal placement rule that applies (count the decimal places in both factors; line up the decimal point).
  • One short justification sentence for the reasoning prompt, so a sub or co-teacher can grade consistently.
